Team manager Enzo Maresca from English Premier League club Chelsea has been suspended for one match following his emotional celebration during the 2-1 home victory against Liverpool. The Italian will not be allowed to coach his team from the sidelines during Saturday’s away match at Nottingham Forest.
As the English Football Association (FA) announced on Wednesday, Maresca has also been fined £8,000 (approximately €10,700). The 45-year-old openly admitted to the charges of improper conduct.
Protest and Celebration: Chelsea Coach Sees Yellow-Red
Maresca initially received a yellow card for loudly protesting a penalty decision and was then shown a second yellow (red card) in the sixth minute of stoppage time after Estevao Willian’s winning goal. The coach had run along the sidelines celebrating and had celebrated with his players.
Speaking to Italian media, Maresca explained that his behavior was an “instinctive reaction” that had been worth it.
