A fishing village outshines the country’s elite and sensationally celebrates the championship.
The sensation is complete! On Monday, Mjällby AIK secured the championship title in the Swedish Allsvenskan ahead of schedule with a 2-0 (2-0) victory over IFK Göteborg.
The club from the fishing village of Hällevik, with only 1,500 residents, has been writing a football fairytale for weeks. Now the village club took the final step. With three matches still to play, Mjällby holds an unassailable eleven-point lead over second-placed Hammarby IF.

Mjällby AIK players celebrating in Gothenburg
Jacob Bergström (21st minute) finished artistically with his back to the goal, paving the way for the sensational title. Tom Pettersson (28th minute) extends the lead before halftime.
In 2016, Mjällby almost relegated to the fourth division
The team coached by Anders Torstensson has led the table since the 15th matchday. Their only defeat of the season so far came on May 11th.
Back in 2016, Mjällby only avoided relegation to the fourth division on the final matchday. Then the slow rebuild began – without an investor, mind you. After two consecutive promotions in 2018 and 2019, they established themselves in the top division.
Now the underdog Mjällby left behind major Swedish clubs like record champions Malmö FF, AIK Solna, or IFK Göteborg, reaching the provisional peak of this success story with the title win.
