Manchester United is currently clearly on an upward trend – and United coach Ruben Amorim played with fire according to club legend Rio Ferdinand.
Although Ruben Amorim appears more firmly seated than ever in the coaching chair at Manchester United after three competitive match victories, there is mild criticism from United legend Rio Ferdinand.
In his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents , the former center-back accused Amorim of having his team operate too riskily on the field. “I admire it to a certain degree. But he played Russian roulette with his job,” explained the 46-year-old, who on the other hand was also satisfied with the performance.
Ruben Amorim recently managed to secure three consecutive Premier League victories with Manchester United
“PSG does that. This squad cannot achieve that”
What Ferdinand means is that the good form of the Red Devils was not triggered by a major tactical change by the Portuguese: “I don’t think he changed anything drastically, he just optimized.”
The former United star emphasized: “Many fans demanded this. Simply optimize what you have a little. Maybe not push so much into offense, maybe sometimes be a bit more conservative when we don’t have possession.”
The former England international considers this more “conservative” playing style appropriate: “You can’t press, press, press for 90 minutes unless you’re an absolute beast of a team. PSG does that. This coach couldn’t achieve that with this squad.”
Manchester United: Amorim sticks to his line
“That’s just how it goes sometimes. If we look back in six months and say that Man United is playing in the Champions League or something like that, he’ll probably sit there confidently and say: ‘Well, if I had changed, I’d probably be unemployed because I did things that are foreign to me,'” Ferdinand continued.
Manchester United came out of the worst season in club history under Amorim in the summer, where they only finished 15th in the Premier League. After a weak start to the season, the 40-year-old’s position also seemed shaky in the current season.
Recently, the Red Devils managed to secure three consecutive league victories for the first time in quite a while – among other things, they beat the struggling Liverpool around Florian Wirtz (2:1). Thus, the club from Manchester currently stands in sixth place in the league table.
