Selke can imagine returning to the Bundesliga

Davie Selke left Hamburger SV in the summer

Davie Selke can imagine a return to the Bundesliga. Currently, however, the striker is first and foremost cheering for Hamburger SV in their relegation battle.

Former junior international striker Davie Selke can imagine a return to the Bundesliga. “Of course,” the 30-year-old said in a Sport-Bild interview when asked, adding that his career was “far from over”: “There were discussions in the summer – and there will be opportunities again in the future that could enable me to return.”

Selke had moved from Hamburger SV to Turkish first-division club Istanbul Basaksehir in the summer. Previously, the striker had led HSV to their long-awaited promotion as the top scorer in the 2. Bundesliga with 22 goals. However, his contract was not extended afterwards.

“Of course, the summer period was emotionally very challenging for me. But with some distance, I have processed the issue,” Selke said regarding the negotiations: “My plan was always for my path to continue at HSV. Given the very successful season, I showed maximum cooperation in the contract talks to find a solution. More willingness on my part was hardly possible. Unfortunately, we still did not come to a positive result.”

Selke Had Bundesliga Options in the Summer

He “could have stayed in Germany, I had opportunities from the Bundesliga,” but also offers from Spain and Italy, said Selke, who, besides HSV, also played for Werder Bremen, RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC, and 1. FC Köln. Ultimately, he decided to go to Istanbul with his family. “The conditions for us players are of a high Bundesliga level. I just have to get used to the Turkish referees,” said Selke.

The Schorndorf native also cheers for his former club from Afar. “I am convinced of HSV’s survival in the league. This momentum that arises in the Volkspark together with the fans is an incredible bonus. The coaching team is doing a good job,” said Selke.
