Premier League: Crisis club ends horror series after more than eight months

Hwang celebrates the goal to make it 2-0

In England, a horror streak ends at the start of the year. After more than eight months, a crisis club celebrates a victory again.

In their 20th attempt, Wolverhampton Wanderers achieved their redemptive first win of the season in the English Premier League. The bottom-placed team won surprisingly clearly with a score of 3:0 (3:0) against relegation rival West Ham United, thereby doubling their points total. Nevertheless, the Wolves, with only six points, remain almost hopelessly stuck at the bottom of the table: the gap to safety is twelve points.

Jhon Arias (4th minute), former Leipzig player Hwang Hee-Chan (31st minute, penalty), and Mateus Mané (41st minute) scored the goals against Niclas Füllkrug’s former club before halftime. The German international had left West Ham on loan in winter and joined AC Milan.

The Wolves, who had let numerous key players like Matheus Cunha or Rayan Ait-Nouri leave in the summer and have been coached by Rob Edwards since November, had only managed three draws against Manchester United (1:1), Brighton and Hove Albion (1:1), and Tottenham Hotspur (1:1) this season amidst 16 previous defeats. Derby County holds the negative record in the Premier League with only eleven points in the 2007/08 season.

For Wolverhampton, it was their first league win since the 3-0 against Leicester City on April 26, 2025 – that’s after more than eight months! Curiously, back then, the Wolves were the team of the moment, celebrating their sixth consecutive victory and ridding themselves of all relegation worries. Hardly anyone can remember that now.
