FC Bayern: Díaz makes Liverpool suffer even more

Michael Olise and Luis Diaz really come into their own at FC Bayern and are reminiscent of a legendary wing team.

Luis Díaz once again underlines his value for FC Bayern. In England, he is all the more sorely missed.

New year, old superpowers: This applies equally to FC Bayern and Luis Díaz. With the 8-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, the Munich team achieved their highest win under coach Vincent Kompany so far – also thanks to the Colombian, who was crucially involved.

Díaz had initiated the record champion’s 1-0 in the early Sunday evening, scored the interim 2-1 himself, played a decisive role in Wolfsburg’s second own goal for 4-1, and also contributed an assist for Harry Kane in the second half.

In the Bundesliga alone, the 28-year-old now has nine goals and nine assists after 15 games. An outstanding record.

Díaz immediately impresses at FC Bayern

However, this is likely to give some Liverpool FC officials pause for thought. The Reds had sold Díaz to Germany for 70 million in the summer – a move that is likely to cause Liverpool considerable pain now, despite the financial compensation.

While the offensive player immediately convinces in the Bundesliga, the English team is stumbling more or less through the season. In the Premier League, Arne Slot’s team is currently in fourth place and 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. In the Champions League, Liverpool is only in ninth place.

Therefore, former football professionals Daniel Sturridge and Gary Neville had a heated exchange about Liverpool’s current season shortly before the goalless draw with Arsenal – at the center of the dispute in the Sky Sports studio was an argument about Díaz.

Díaz: “The best attacker last season”

Neville primarily criticized the Reds’ general attitude: “They reached the peak, they won the league, and then they basically rested. That’s what happened. Should we question their mentality or say other things? A part of me now thinks it must also be because they thought they had made it.”

While Neville did not want to attribute Liverpool’s performance decline to a specific player, Sturridge saw it differently and showed little understanding for the sale of Bayern star Díaz: “He was one of the best players they had last season. (…) Luis Díaz was the best attacker last season. Mohamed Salah set all records, Luis Díaz was tenacious in attack, pressed, scored goals, and created chances.”

Sturridge added another example: “Trent Alexander-Arnold was the most creative right-back we have seen in the Premier League in the last 15 years. He no longer plays for the club. We are talking about two key players who are no longer at this football club.”

After the departure of important key players like Luis Díaz, who moved to FC Bayern in July 2025, Liverpool has practically dropped out of the title race. New signings like Florian Wirtz are still in the adaptation process, while Díaz thrives for Bayern – to Liverpool’s dismay.
