After Xabi Alonso’s dismissal from Real Madrid, Hansi Flick is not worried about his coaching colleague. The coach of FC Barcelona rather sees the next important tasks already awaiting Alonso.
In the end, it was Hansi Flick of all people who cost Xabi Alonso his job at Real Madrid. However, the German coach of FC Barcelona does not see his colleague’s career as permanently damaged.
“He is a fantastic coach and has a great future,” Flick said on Wednesday. Barcelona had beaten Madrid 3-2 in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday, and a day later, Real announced Alonso’s departure “by mutual consent.”

Flick: “I only wish him the best”
“That’s football, that’s not my business,” Flick said: “But I can say that I have a very good relationship with Xabi. I got to know him in Leverkusen when I was national coach and have always stayed in contact. I only wish him the best and I think he will find something new, a big project.”
At Real, Alonso was initially replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa, previously coach of the second team. Alonso had led Bayer Leverkusen to the first German championship in the club’s history in 2024, moving to Real in the summer of 2025.
After the separation, speculation is primarily about an engagement with FC Liverpool, for whom Alonso also played professionally for a long time.
