The German international goes under with Newcastle United at Manchester City.
German internationals Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw missed out on successfully defending their title in the English League Cup with Newcastle United.
In the semi-final second leg, the Magpies lost 1:3 (0:3) against Manchester City; the first leg at St. James’ Park had already been won 2:0 by manager Pep Guardiola’s star-studded Sky Blues.
Howe: “Are very disappointed”
“We are very disappointed with our performance in the first half,” said Newcastle coach Eddie Howe after the final whistle on BeIn Sports .
“We didn’t perform well, neither individually nor as a team,” Howe clarified.
Especially for Woltemade, the match was a true debacle; the DFB star found no space in the attacking center and ultimately had to settle for eleven touches of the ball. The game was already over for him by halftime; he remained in the changing room – his team was already almost hopelessly behind at that point.
The substitutes, in particular, performed well in the second half. “We changed a few things. We had some really good scoring opportunities. I’m frustrated that we only scored one goal,” said Howe.
Woltemade gets a terrible rating
Former Bundesliga professional Omar Marmoush, who was allowed to start instead of star striker Erling Haaland, provided an early decisive lead in the Etihad Stadium with his brace (7th/29th), Tijjani Reijnders (32nd) added another. Substitute Anthony Elanga scored for Newcastle (62nd) after an assist from Thiaw.
“Pep Guardiola’s team HUMILIATES Newcastle and meets Arsenal in the Carabao Cup,” headlined the English Sun. The Chronicle gave Woltemade, who is no longer an undisputed regular starter, the worst rating of the match, a 2 out of 10.
The paper wrote about the tall attacker: “Zero service. Looked for passes that never came to him. Only 11 touches and no shots on goal – without confidence. The poor rating is not solely his fault, but City should have been put under pressure from the start.”
Woltemade “nowhere to be seen” at times
Former Man City professional Micah Richards said on Sky : “Woltemade is obviously a very good player, but he doesn’t fit Newcastle’s system and the way they want to play.”
Woltemade was “nowhere to be seen” at times on Wednesday. “In the second half, that changed a bit when Wissa came on,” the 13-time English international striker continued.
“They need to decide how they want to play. If they want to continue to use Woltemade as a central striker, they need to figure out how to better integrate him into the game so he can show what he can do,” Richards opined.
City follows Arsenal into the final; The Gunners had also prevailed 1:0 against Chelsea on Tuesday thanks to a late goal from DFB striker Kai Havertz (first leg 3:2). The Carabao Cup final will take place on March 22nd at Wembley Stadium.
