Strong second: Victoria Carl

The cross-country skiing Olympic champion strengthens her second place in the overall World Cup.

With an impressive double strike, Olympic champion Victoria Carl has made a huge step into the historic first podium of a German cross -country skier in the overall World Cup. The 29 -year -old Thuringian became third on Sunday at the legendary Holmenkollen in Oslo over 10 km outdoors and thus strengthened second place in the overall ranking. Carl third had already become twice the distance on Saturday.

Carl was 10.0 seconds behind the Swedish surprise winner Moa Ilar, who prevailed in front of Norwegian Heidi Weng (+1.6). The American Jessie Diggins became sixth and secured the overall World Cup for the third time. Her sharpest opponents Kerttu Niskanen (Finland/8.) And Astrid Oyre Slind (Norway/13.) Clearly left Carl behind.

Before the last race of the season on Wednesday in Tallinn and the following weekend in Lahti, DIGGINS is ahead of Carl (1641) with 2071 points. Slind (1515) is third in front of Niskanen (1510). Since the introduction of the World Cup in the 1979/80 season, no German runner has ended up in the top three in the final ranking. Evi Diesbacher stand was fourth (2002/03 and 2005/06).

Norway’s star runner Therese Johaug, who celebrated her 88th World Cup victory on Saturday, came fifth on Sunday. At least it could have been the last race at home for the 36-year-old. Whether Johaug, who celebrated her comeback at the home World Cup in Trondheim and had stayed there without a title, returned to the Olympics until 2026 after the season or continues her career.
