Criticism in England? “Tuchel said what many think”

With critical statements, Thomas Tuchel makes you take notice of the way of playing his predecessor Gareth Southgate. TV expert Didi Hamann strengthens the former Bayern head coach.

With two victories against Albania (2-0) and Latvia (3-0), Thomas Tuchel celebrated a successful start as an English national coach.

Despite the two victories, the 51 -year -old team was not spared criticism, the English newspaper Daily Mail wrote, for example: “England was boring and frightened – little has changed since Gareth Southgate has changed.”

It was Tuchel himself who had criticized the style of his predecessor Southgate at the European Championship a few days ago in conversation with ITV . Above all, the English eleven lacked “identity, clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of play patterns, the freedom of players, the charisma of the players and hunger”.

Hamann: “I understand why he said it”

In the discussion about Tuchel’s hard words, TV expert Didi Hamann has now also spoken. As the former international explained, he could understand Tuchel’s choice of words. “He said what many think or thought. Whether he should say that as a national coach. I understand why he said it, ”said Hamann at Sport Bild .

“You have already seen in Munich that he appeals to things as they are. You will see whether this leads to success. He has of course increased the pressure on himself. Also because Southgate was very high in some players.”

Lothar Matthäus and Philipp Lahm Tuchel’s statements about his predecessor Southgate had previously seen more critical. “That doesn’t belong. A trainer usually gets the red card,” said Matthäus. “No matter where he worked, at some point there always seems to be tensions,” said Lahm.

The positive words from Hamann to Tuchel come as a surprise. In April last year, he had called for the discharge of the current England coach at FC Bayern in April last year. Previously, a dispute had even flared up between the two because Hamann had repeatedly critically commented. In this context, Tuchel even did not accept an excuse of the former Bayern player.

So far, as an English national coach, a lot has been going according to plan, the “Three Lions” lead their World Cup qualification group ahead of Albania and Latvia (three points each).
