When France’s striker Kylian Mbappé decides against an extension of the contract with PSG, he waived a quarter of a billion euros.
Kylian Mbappé waived 250 million euros when he decided last summer against an extension of the contract with Paris Saint-Germain and to switch to Real Madrid.
The French international could have spent another year in the French capital by activating a one-sided extension option in his PSG contract.
Kylian Mbappé dispensed with the switch to Real Madrid to 250 million euros
According to L’Equipe, Mbappé would have received a basic salary of 70 million euros gross during an extension of the contract. In addition, 180 million euros for premiums, bonuses and image rights would have been added – an increase of around 20 percent compared to its references from the pre -season.
Instead, he signed at Real Madrid for an annual salary of 32 million euros plus a rumored signature of 100 million euros.
Special conditions for image rights
The salary negotiations between Mbappé and the royal were obviously complex. The Spanish record champion, who normally practices a 50/50 division of the image rights with his players, made an extraordinary exception for the Frenchman: Mbappé received 80 percent of his image rights.
This condition was enforced by Mbappé’s mother and agent Fayza Lamari during the negotiations and contributed significantly to the conclusion of the transfer. The Spanish AS described the resulting income due to the marketing power of the 15-fold Champions League winner as “rain of millions”.
It is also noteworthy that Mbappé had rejected an even more lucrative offer before moving to Real Madrid. The Saudi association Al-Hilal offered the offensive player for only one season-an offer that caused a sensation on social media.
Tensions when saying goodbye
The departure of the French superstar of PSG took place under tense circumstances. After the 2018 world champion told the association by letter in June 2023 that he would not pull his contract option, the relationship with the club deteriorated significantly. The striker was temporarily taken out of the squad last season at PSG.
The financial conflict between Mbappé and PSG has not yet been fully settled. The player demands 55 million euros in outstanding salaries, premiums and image rights – a dispute that is now to be negotiated before an ordinary court.
