The surprising death of the 34-time Colombian international also caused dismay in Europe. Gianluigi Buffon, his former teammate at Parma, mourned on Instagram for his friend.

“We played and won in a large Parma in the golden times,” wrote the former Italian national goalkeeper. “He fought on the field without being able to protect himself, and apart from the field, I like to remember his friendliness and humanity, which made him a role model for everyone.”

Bolano moved from his homeland to Parma in 1999 as a 22-year-old from his homeland, where he played his most games (128) in his career. He also ran for Sampdoria Genoa, US Lecce and FC Modena in Italy before he ended his career at CĂșcuta Deportivo in Colombia in 2013.

Subsequently, Bolano worked as a youth coach at Independiente Santa FĂ© and most recently as an assistant coach of the Colombian U17 national team.
