That is behind the Bayern puzzle around Herbert

The coach of FC Bayern Munich, Gordon Herbert, will train the Canadian national basketball team from 2026. Is the time of the ex-national coach in Germany over?

The 66-year-old emphasized that the agreement “neither my current contract with Bavaria nor a possible contract extension with Bayern Munich beyond the summer of 2026”. Nevertheless, the general surprise was great.

After all, the Munich -based company refrained from developing the German world champion coach and only published a statement by the trainer himself.

But there are good reasons for this, as Sport1 learned. The focus is on the time factor.

Double role of Herbert conceivable?

Sport1 Weiß: With Herbert there was a fundamental exchange on this topic a long time ago. So the association knew that the Canadian can imagine an engagement in his home country.

As is the case with FC Bayern in the coaching position beyond 2026, the Munich planning is not yet a specific topic. At least one thing is clear: Herbert’s commitment to the Canadian national team is not synonymous with the end of his time at Bavaria.

A double function as a coach of a Bundesliga club and a foreign national team would be conceivable for Herbert, as can be seen from the statement. There are some examples that such a scenario is conceivable. However, it is still completely open whether the club can also imagine something like this.

First of all, everyone involved is about achieving the goals in the near future. Herbert is looking forward to the next home game in the Bundesliga on Sunday against BG Göttingen and the beginning of the playoffs on May 17th. “We still have a lot here,” says Herbert. Bayern lead the BBL table and are considered the title favorite.

Herbert led Germany to World Cup gold

In the coming year, Herbert wants to (also) high with his home country. The team led by NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won bronze at the sensational German World Cup win 2023 and has a great future in front of them. From 2001 to 2002 he was an assistant coach in Canada, in 2018 he returned to the sidelines and coaches the selection in the World Cup qualification and the Olympic qualification tournament 2021.

He then moved to Germany. From 2021 to 2024 Herbert looked after the DBB selection and celebrated great success: bronze at the home European Championships 2022, the following year the World Cup title and at the end of his era fourth place at the 2024 Olympics. He has been training Bavaria since last year.
