Discharge of President Rodrigues: CBF appeals

A court in Rio de Janeiro had declared the employment contract of the previous president invalid and ordered the dismissal. Now the reaction follows.

The Brazilian Football Association CBF takes action against the deduction of its President Ednaldo Rodrigues. On Friday, the Presidium made an appeal at the Supreme Court of Justice. This was reported by the AFP news agency, which is the lawsuit.

A court in Rio de Janeiro had ordered Rodrigues’ and “fastest possible” new elections on Thursday. The lawyers of the CBF Presidium now complained of a “direct violation” of the constitutional order and applied for an injunction to suspend the election. In addition, they described the appointment of interim president Fernando José Sarney as “illegal” and warned that the decision could lead to international sanctions against Selecao.

Rodrigues had only been re -elected unanimously at the end of March after the three -time world footballer Ronaldo had withdrawn his announced candidacy. But judge Gabriel de Oliveira Zefiro declared the employment contract of the 71-year-old invalid.

The reason for the judgment: one of the signatories, Antonio Carlos Nunes de Lima, was mentally unable to sign the contract and its signature may have a fake. Rodrigues had said on Thursday at the FIFA Congress in Asunción that Nunes de Lima signed the document “from full conviction”.

The Brazilian Football Association thus threatens a serious crisis just a few days after the Italian Carlo Ancelotti’s coach as coach of the national team. Interim President Sarney announced the new elections for May 25, and a day later Ancelotti is to officially take up his new position.

Rodrigues was temporarily suspended after a court found irregularities in his election in 2022. However, a judge of the Supreme Court had rejected Rodrigues after the World Association FIFA had threatened sanctions against Brazilian football.
