Nathan Aspinall has won the European Darts Open in Leverkusen. The Englishman prevailed in a hard-fought final with 8:6 in legs against Damon Heta. For the 33-year-old, his triumph at the eighth event of the European Tour earned him £30,000 in prize money.

Aspinall was superior to Heta in scoring over long stretches of the match and threw the 180 seven times, but Heta was more accurate in the checkouts (50 percent vs. 31 percent). The Australian threw a 140 checkout in the fifth leg, among other things.

Aspinall ousts Schindler from the top

In the European Tour Order of Merit, Aspinall has moved past the previous leader, Martin Schindler, due to the tournament victory.

“The Asp” now has 72,000 pounds with two tournament victories. Schindler, who failed in the second round against Ricardo Pietreczko in Leverkusen, is now second with 58,500 pounds.

In the semi-finals, Aspinall defeated Wessel Nijman 7:6, “The Heat” prevailed 7:3 against Jonny Clayton.
