Darts icon criticizes Premier League mode

In his view, Robert Lewandowski explains his astonishing resignation from the Polish national team - and raises serious accusations.

Phil Taylor sees an urgent need for action regarding the format of the Premier League Darts. He is not alone in his opinion.

Since 2022, the Premier League Darts has been played in a new format. On 16 match days, the eight participants compete against each other in mini-tournaments and determine a winner each time.

This ensures that the top stars of the scene meet directly almost weekly in the spring. What some see as a major advantage of the competition, others see as the danger of monotony.

Phil Taylor is also among the critics. “The format actually needs to be reconsidered,” said the record world champion at Online Darts and demanded: “It’s time to adjust it because it doesn’t work anymore. Also, some players don’t like it.”

The darts legend did not make a concrete suggestion as to how the format should be changed.

Littler and Humphries play against each other frequently

However, she joins the ranks of critics who are particularly bothered by the constant encounters between Luke Littler and Luke Humphries.

The two currently dominant darts players faced each other on six of the 16 preliminary round match days. Both also contested the final of the subsequent Final Four tournament against each other.

While Humphries continues to praise the format (“Do you want to see the duels of the best darts players or would you rather wait six months for them?”), the Belgian Kim Huybrechts, for example, says: “I don’t like the format. It has lost its charm. Who wants to see the 20th duel between Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen in half a year?”

Darts legend Steve Beaton also finds the format “boring” and said on Online Darts: “There are too many players who always play against each other.”
