Basketball-Star Franz Wagner hat seine Teilnahme an der Europameisterschaft mit der deutschen Nationalmannschaft bestätigt.
„Das ist der Plan“, sagte der NBA-Profi von Orlando Magic in der Talk-Reihe „Bestbesetzung“ bei Johannes B. Kerner (MagentaTV+).
Er freue sich sehr auf das Turnier in Finnland, Polen, Zypern und Lettland (27. August bis 14. September – MagentaTV und MagentaSport zeigen die EM live), sagte Wagner.
Nach dem Ausscheiden in den NBA-Playoffs mit Orlando hatte Wagner (23), gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Moritz (28) wichtiger Teil der Weltmeistermannschaft von 2023, seine Zusage noch offengelassen.
„Da wird es ein Gespräch geben“, hatte er damals gesagt. Wagner hatte aber auch bekräftigt, er liebe es, „für mein Land zu spielen, ich liebe die Jungs, mit denen ich dort spiele“.
Franz Wagner: „Haben wieder richtig gutes Team“
Moritz Wagner wird die EM nach seinem Kreuzbandriss Ende 2024 hingegen verpassen.
„Ich glaube, auch wenn Moritz dieses Jahr nicht spielen kann, haben wir wieder ein richtig gutes Team“, sagte sein jüngerer Bruder Franz.
Beide hatten neben dem WM-Titel schon bei der Heim-EM 2022 Bronze mit der DBB-Auswahl geholt. Bei den Olympischen Spielen in Paris verpasste die deutsche Mannschaft eine Medaille im Spiel um Bronze.

He said he is very much looking forward to the tournament in Finland, Poland, Cyprus and Latvia (August 27 to September 14 – MagentaTV and MagentaSport will show the European Championship live), said Wagner.
After being eliminated in the NBA playoffs with Orlando, Wagner (23), together with his brother Moritz (28) was an important part of the 2023 world champion team, had initially left his commitment open.
“There will be a conversation,” he said at the time. Wagner had also emphasized that he loved “playing for my country, I love the guys I play with there.”
Franz Wagner: “We have a really good team again”
Moritz Wagner will miss the European Championship after his cruciate ligament rupture at the end of 2024.
“I think even if Moritz can’t play this year, we have a really good team again,” said his younger brother Franz.
In addition to the World Cup title, both had already won bronze with the DBB team at the home European Championship in 2022. The German team missed a medal in the bronze medal game at the Olympic Games in Paris.
