Despite his delicate situation at FC Barcelona, Marc-André ter Stegen apparently has no contact with Hansi Flick at the moment. However, this in turn has a simple reason.
The situation of national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen at FC Barcelona has worsened further after the signing of Joan Garcia.
With the new addition from Espanyol and Wojciech Szczesny, ter Stegen now has two serious competitors in the fight for the number 1 spot.
Marc-André ter Stegen has been playing for FC Barcelona since 2014
However, there has apparently been no clarifying discussion with coach Hansi Flick about how he sees the hierarchy in the Catalans’ goal next season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, this is only because the German national team’s regular goalkeeper is currently on vacation.
Newspaper draws comparison to Lewandowski
Flick, it is said, wants to comply with the rules in football and “not disturb ter Stegen during his vacation or call him.” The paper draws a comparison with another Barca player in this context.
Poland’s now former national coach Michael Probierz called Robert Lewandowski in his free time to inform him that he would be taking away his captain’s armband. As a result, the striker declared that he would never play under Probierz again.
Ter Stegen is also officially (still) captain of FC Barcelona. But for him, it’s about more than just whether he gets to keep the armband.
Should Flick decide to only plan on using his compatriot as a substitute goalkeeper again next season, this would have serious consequences for the 33-year-old.
Ter Stegen is not planning a club change
After years in the waiting loop, he has finally established himself as number 1 in the DFB team. A reserve role in Barcelona and a resulting lack of match practice is likely to shake the recently won regular place again.
If one believes the media report from Spain, ter Stegen is still firmly convinced that he will be in goal in Barcelona next season as well.
It is reported that he will “not listen to any offers”. And: “He has nothing else in mind than to work towards becoming the regular goalkeeper next season.”
