The defending champion and superstar Emma Meesseman are too strong for the Germans.
The German women’s basketball team must bury their dream of a European Championship medal. In the quarter-finals in Piraeus, the team around WNBA players Leonie Fiebich and Luisa Geiselsöder lost on Wednesday against gold favourite Belgium with 59:83 (36:41). Thus, the Germans must continue to wait for the first precious metal since bronze in 1997.
Luisa Geiselsöder and Frieda Bühner were the best scorers of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) selection with 13 points each, exceptional player Emma Meesseman scored 30 points for Belgium. For Germany, it will now continue in the placement round on Friday against Turkey, depending on the outcome, the DBB team will then play on Sunday against Lithuania or the Czech Republic for fifth or seventh place.
In any case, at least the second-best European Championship placement since the bronze medal 28 years ago is already on the books. At the 2023 European Championship, it was the first participation in twelve years, the German women finished sixth. At the current tournament, Fiebich and Co. have to do without the WNBA stars Satou and Nyara Sabally as well as the injured captain Marie Gülich.
