“A crazy journey”: CL coup enthusiastic

The German trainer Matthias Jaissle reviews the path of his team after the triumph in Saudi Arabia. His own “journey” was also turbulent.

The German trainer Matthias Jaissle reviewed the turbulent years after the triumph in the Asian Champions League. “It was a crazy journey. Not too long ago it looked very different,” said the coach of the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nahli, who three years ago as table 15. had relegated from the first division and now won the continental premier class for the first time.

The title is also the climax of changeable years for Jaissle. At Red Bull Salzburg and previously FC Liefering, he was considered the upcoming trainer shooting star of German football.

After his negotiations with Al-Nahli became known in July 2023 shortly before the start of the season in Austria, the Austrians snapped out Jaissle without further ado. A little later the signature followed in Saudi Arabia.

Less than two years later, Jaissle celebrated the first title with the club with a 2-0 final victory over Japanese representative Kawasaki Frontale.

“I am so proud of the players how they behaved in this competition, how they performed, how the trip went,” he said afterwards: “And also on the fans who created an incredible atmosphere that we never take for granted.”
