Basketball: Herbert is “100 percent” committed to Bavaria

The hot phase in the fight for the play-off places is heralded.

The 66-year-old reacts to the unfortunate communication around the news that in 2026 he will take over the national team of his homeland Canada.

World champion coach Gordon Herbert has sworn the loyalty to FC Bayern after the announcement of his surprising takeover of the Canadian national basketball team. The agreement with his home country from 2026 influences “neither my current contract with Bavaria nor a possible contract extension with Bayern Munich beyond the summer of 2026,” emphasized Herbert on request and “100 percent” known as the German champion.

The job in Munich, where it is bound for another season, “fulfills me extremely”, added the 66-year-old and emphasized: “I am very respectful here and I would also like to work with this club as long as I will be possible.”

The Canadian association announced on Thursday that Herbert would take over the national team in a year. He had “informed Bayern some time ago about the general interest from my homeland,” said the German selection coach at the World Cup triumph 2023. At the same time, Herbert’s known: “May communication could have been better treated yesterday.”

Now he is looking forward to the next home game in the Bundesliga on Sunday against BG Göttingen and the play-off start on May 17th. “We still have a lot here,” said Herbert. The Bavarians are at the top of the table and are the favorite of the title.

With Canada, Herbert is striving for further heights at the 2027 World Cup and at the 2028 Olympics. The team led by NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won bronze at the German World Cup Triumph 2023 and is considered to be highly rated.
