Bitter Farewell for ex-Bayern keeper
Pepe Reina is Sent Off in his Farewell Game. The Former Bayern Goalkeeper Ends his career at the Age of 42.
So Pepe Reina probably didn’t imagine his farewell to professional football. In the last game of his career, the 42-year-old goalkeeper of FC Como was sent off with a red card in the 38th matchday of Serie A against Inter Milan (0:2).
The fateful foul that led to the dismissal occurred in the 42nd minute. Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu played a pass to Mehdi Taremi. Reina came far out of his goal and touched Taremi lightly on the foot. This caused him to stumble and prevented him from finishing.
Pepe Reina Saw the Red Card in his last game as a professional
Referee Davide Massa initially allowed play to continue, but a few moments later the video assistant intervened. The pictures showed the slight contact, whereupon Massa had no choice but to send Reina off with a red card.
Standing ovations for Pepe Reina
A bitter end to his career for the Spanish veteran: As he left the pitch, Reina was given a standing ovation by the spectators, and Como coach Cesc Fàbregas took his goalkeeper in his arms.
In his approximately 25 years as a professional, Reina was exclusively active in the top European leagues. The goalkeeper played for FC Barcelona, FC Liverpool, SSC Napoli and AC Milan, among others. He played the most games (394) for the Reds.
In the 2014/15 season, he also stood between the posts three times for FC Bayern. Even though he was only a substitute goalkeeper in Munich, he celebrated his only championship title with FCB.
Reina was also successful with the Spanish national team: he became European champion in 2008 and 2012, and in 2010 he crowned himself world champion with the team.
