Ski star Thomas Tumler has had the best season of his career. He went through a dark time.
From a sporting perspective, the past winter could hardly have gone better for Thomas Tumler. He won his first World Cup race and took silver in the giant slalom at the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. But the 35-year-old wasn’t doing well at all.
He is now making his marriage breakup public and giving emotional insights. “She told me she had no feelings anymore. That came out of nowhere,” he told the Schweizer Illustrierten.
Thomas Tumler announced his marriage breakup
In Piedmont, the 34-year-old married his longtime girlfriend Svenja in June 2024. Ski colleagues Marco Odermatt, Justin Murisier and the brothers Mauro and Gino Caviezel were guests.
But just seven months later, the marriage broke up again – in the middle of the season. “I hid. Sometimes I just lay in bed and cried all day. I pulled myself together for the races,” he now reveals.
Ski star after separation: Tumler shed many tears
According to his own statement, the Swiss lost ten kilograms due to his grief and therefore even needed new ski boots. He simply lacked the strength for his previous shoes.
Things eventually went well again in the races. But after the last World Cup came the setback. “In the middle of a ski tour, I collapsed and cried in the snow. I was a happy vice world champion – and then bang. That was bad.”
He took a lot of time and processed everything. He’s doing much better now.
