Victoria Carl does not go beyond qualification in Tallinn in the sprint – but still takes a step towards the podium in the overall ranking.
Despite leaving the sprint qualification, Olympic champion Victoria Carl has come closer to the historic first podium of a German cross-country skier in the overall World Cup. The 29-year-old Thuringian missed the Ko-rounds of the best 30 outdoors on Wednesday in Tallinn, but kept her second place in the overall ranking, after chaser Kerttu Niskanen (Finland) also left in the qualification. Norwegian Astrid Oyre Slind was not at the start.
Before the last two season races this weekend in Lahti, Carl (1659) is in front of Niskanen (1529) and SLind (1515). The American Jessie Diggins had already secured the overall World Cup for the third time last weekend. Since the introduction of the World Cup in the 1979/80 season, no German runner has ended up in the top three in the final ranking. Evi Diesbacher stand was fourth (2002/03 and 2005/06).
The Swiss Nadine Fähndrich secured the day victory in the Estonian capital. Coletta Rydzek reached the final for the second time this season and became fifth. Norway’s top star Johannes Hösflot Kläbo celebrated his 96th World Cup victory in the men.
