New CbF President: Samir Xaud

The 41-year-old Samir Xaud takes over the association of the record world champion in a crisis.

The Brazilian Football Confederation CBF has been led by a 41-year-old sports physician since Sunday. In the midst of an institutional crisis, Samir Xaud replaces Ednaldo Rodrigues, who was re-elected at the end of March but then removed from office by a court on May 15. Rodrigues’ last official act was to sign Carlo Ancelotti (65) as the new Selecao coach after more than two years of courting.

The Italian, who had an emotional farewell from the “Royal Whites” on Saturday after three Champions League titles with Real Madrid, will nominate his first squad on Monday evening in Rio de Janeiro. Record world champion Brazil is faltering in the Eliminatorias for the upcoming World Cup, but could secure an early ticket for the finals in the USA, Mexico and Canada in the upcoming duels in Ecuador (June 5) and against Paraguay (June 10).

Xaud received 103 of 141 votes in the election. Because the regional associations, thanks to their higher voting weight, had agreed on the head of the Roraima state association in advance, the 40 first and second division clubs, who were also entitled to vote, could not nominate an opposing candidate. As a result, about half of the clubs stayed away from the election in protest.
