Eintracht women on track in Europe
The qualifying first leg is a one-sided affair, now participation in the new European Cup awaits.
The footballers from Eintracht Frankfurt have opened the door to the newly created European Cup. Coach Niko Arnautis’ team won the first leg of the qualification against 1. FC Slovacko 4-0 (2-0) on Wednesday and will now travel to the second leg in the Czech Republic (October 15th/7 p.m.) with a big advantage. If Eintracht clears this hurdle, they will play in the round of 16 in November.
The national players Elisa Senß (3rd, penalty) and Laura Freigang (15th) scored early for Frankfurt, for captain Freigang it was the first competitive goal of the season. As a result, the hosts failed to take advantage of numerous chances, but Nina Lührßen’s goal (80th) and Anezka Zelenkova’s own goal (82nd) later ensured a very clear victory. The European Cup should be more than just a consolation prize for the SGE: Eintracht clearly failed to qualify for the Champions League against Real Madrid.
The newly created competition will be played in a different, more traditional format than the premier class. There is no league phase; all rounds, including the final, take place in a knockout system with a return leg. After the round of 16 in November, the quarter-finals will be played in February.
