Europe as a role model: MLS aligns game calendar

Thomas Müller takes his first win with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS playoffs. The ex-Bayern star reveals what makes the team so strong at the moment.

The Major League Soccer will soon play at the same time as the top European leagues.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) is aligning its game schedule with the top European leagues. The league announced this on Thursday. Accordingly, the seasons from 2027 onwards will start in July and end in the following May.

The current season began in February, and the final for the MLS Cup will take place on December 6th.

Following the European model, there will also be a winter break, from mid-December to early February. The upcoming 2026 season is intended to be a kind of transition: the season begins in February, and after 14 games in the regular season and the play-offs, the champion will be crowned three months later in May.

“A transformative moment”

Another side effect is that the MLS transfer window is open at the same time as in Europe.

“This change is a transformative moment for Major League Soccer,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber: “Aligning our calendar with the major leagues of the world will strengthen the global competitiveness of our clubs, create better opportunities in the transfer market and ensure that our play-offs remain the focus without interruption.”
