Sport1 : Mr. Bürki, what has changed since the change from BVB to the USA?
Roman Bürki : The housing situation. I live somewhere else. Football of course too, it is a lot of fun here. I also found a little myself again after a difficult time in Germany. But I just enjoy being here to play here. It’s different, but it’s fun.
From BVB to St. Louis: Bürki explains his motivation
Sport1 : If you come from a club like BVB with a huge story and a huge fan base to a club like St. Louis, which has been completely rebuilt in principle – where are the differences?
Bürki : For me, that was actually crucial to be part of it, to see how it is to build a club from zero. And as I said, I am here in the MLS for two and a half years. Before we started really, I was already there to just experience and see everything. This grows to your heart and the club is a lot of fun, especially if you win.
Sport1 : After three games in the MLS season, you have not yet conceded a goal.
Bürki : For me, of course, this is always the goal when I go into the game and I’m glad that the team and I did it that way.
Bürki: Special BVB moment under Tuchel
Sport1 : In retrospect, what is the most beautiful memory of the time at BVB?
Bürki : Clearly, the first cup victory, then under Thomas Tuchel, even then the celebration on Borsigplatz, that’s unique and I will never forget my life.
Sport1 : The mood you have in the Westfalenstadion is missing?
Bürki : Yes, in any case it is very special to have something like that. I think anyone who can play there in the stadium can count themselves lucky. But in the end I am also here to play football and it is a lot of fun here.
BVB crisis? “Of course it’s already hard”
Sport1 : The crisis that BVB is currently experiencing in the Bundesliga, to what extent does it touch you?
Bürki : Of course it is already hard to see how it works at the moment and it is of course also difficult to get out of such a phase. But I am convinced that BVB will do that good that it is going up again.
Roman Bürki played 233 games for BVB
Sport1 : What makes St. Louis a special club?
Bürki : Especially when we play at home. The fans are excited enormously, are extremely behind the club. Maybe also because we are in a city that doesn’t have so many big teams that play in the top leagues. It’s very nice to play there and inspire people.
End of career? So plans Bürki
Sport1 : Sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel says that if there are no injuries, the team belongs, between third to five and there are no limits. What are the goals for the season?
Bürki : It is clear: to create the playoffs and after that everything is possible, definitely.
Sport1 : Will this be the last stop in your career or what are the plans?
Bürki : I don’t really know that yet, I haven’t thought about that yet. Sure, I am here in my last year. But we are mutually in exchange. The club and I, we try to find a good solution.
