Ex-Kölner Hector criticizes Wirtz change

Gareth Southgate was knighted on Wednesday for his services to football. Special honor for Thomas Tuchel's predecessor.

Florian Wirtz will play for FC Liverpool in the future. Jonas Hector, former German national player and Cologne legend, criticizes this decision, however.

In his podcast “Schlag und fertig,” the former German national player complained that Wirtz decided on a future in Liverpool and against a commitment to FC Bayern: “I would have liked it if he had played for Bayern. Especially prospectively for the national team and for next year,” said Hector.

What the former captain of 1. FC Köln means by this: There are currently six German A-national players under contract in Munich, with whom Wirtz could have practiced for the 2026 World Cup.

“Because you can play better if you have a decent block. That’s why I would have liked to see it,” Hector continued.

In the squad of FC Liverpool, on the other hand, there is not a single German national player. That’s not what Wirtz was primarily concerned with when he moved, the ex-professional suspected.

“In the end, it’s also certainly about money. And a club like Liverpool is in a good position in that regard.”

Wirtz, on the other hand, primarily cited sporting goals as the reason for his move to England. Liverpool is “one of the three best clubs in the world.”
