FIFA: New women’s tournament with Afghan refugee team

FIFA organizes another tournament to promote women’s football. The Afghan refugee team is also included.

To promote women’s football, the World Association FIFA organizes another international tournament. In addition to the national teams of Tschad, Libya and the United Arab Emirates, the “FIFA Unites: Women’s Series” will also take the Afghan refugee team in an international tournament for the first time.

“The access of all women to football” is an “important goal of FIFA”, President Gianni Infantino is quoted in a press release on Wednesday.

In May, the FIFA Council approved the establishment of the Afghan refugee team as part of the efforts to support players inside and outside the country. Viewing camps, including in England and Sydney, were carried out under the Scottish trainer Pauline Hamill.

The competition will take place in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) from October 23 to 29, 2025. “We are aware of the potential that football offers on and off. These friendly games are more than just a competition,” said Infantino: “They symbolize hope and progress for women around the world.”

The games are played in championship format, each team completes three games. The team with the most points wins the series.
