The World Association FIFA will organize a game for children and football legends in memory of the late Pope Francis. This was announced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the sidelines of the burial on Saturday in Rome.
“At our last meeting with the Pope in February, we talked about organizing a game this year to combine his passion for this sport and the connection between young people,” Infantino told the Italian broadcaster Sky TG24: “This game will surely take place in his honor and commemoration.” However, an appointment is still pending.
Pope Francis was a big football fan. “Francis always said that football is a school of life in which you learn to live with others, to respect your opponents and to follow the rules. When I think of his words about the value of sport – how he connects people, teaches and conveys values - I am very moved,” said Infantino. The Argentine Pontifex died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
