Girona coach: “Everyone would like to have Ter Stegen”

Barca coach Hansi Flick emphasizes the high quality in goal and declares Joan García number one. At the same time he praises ter Stegen and Szczesny, but makes it clear: Marc decides his own future.

Marc-André ter Stegen is reportedly on the verge of a move to avoid jeopardizing his World Cup chances. His potential new coach would welcome him with open arms.

Coach Miguel Ángel Sanchez Munoz has confirmed FC Girona’s interest in national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen (33). “He is a top player. Everyone would love to have ter Stegen,” the coach, known as Michel, said according to Spanish media on Monday evening at an award ceremony of the Catalan Football Federation.

Ter Stegen, who wants to stand between the posts for Germany at the World Cup this summer, no longer has a future at his club FC Barcelona.

According to consistent reports in Spanish media, Barca is currently in intensive negotiations with Girona, who are third from bottom in the league, about a loan deal until the end of the season. For ter Stegen’s dream of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada this summer as number one to come true, he urgently needs match practice.

Nagelsmann’s clear statement regarding ter Stegen

National coach Julian Nagelsmann had recently made this clear. “It’s important that he plays,” Nagelsmann said, “whether that’s at a top European club or not, is not the deciding factor.” But: “Of course, it would be good if he also plays reasonably well.”

In Girona, ter Stegen could excel. The defense has conceded 33 goals after 17 games, the worst in the league. In addition, Girona is only about 100 km north of Barcelona. Ter Stegen, who is separated, would therefore not be far from his two sons.

The long-serving captain is still under contract at Barcelona until 2028. In December, he made another appearance after his back surgery in the cup match against third-division side CD Guadalajara (2-0).

“It was a good opportunity for him, he has given a lot to the club. We spoke with the coaching staff and decided that he would play. Only for this game,” Flick had explained afterwards.
