World Cup co-host Canada surprisingly failed in the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup in the USA. The team of former Leipzig Bundesliga coach Jesse Marsch lost 5:6 to Guatemala in the penalty shootout. After 90 and 120 minutes it was 1:1.

Jonathan David had initially put the Canadians in the lead (30th, penalty), after a red card for his teammate Jacon Shaffelburg (45.+4) Rubio Rubin managed to equalize in regular time (69.).

Guatemala will face the winner of the match between the USA and Costa Rica. The second semi-final will be played by record winner Mexico and Honduras.
