Lewis Holtby is sent off after a rough foul. The former Bundesliga professional’s action costs his team the victory.
Lewis Holtby has done his team a disservice! The summer signing from NAC Breda was shown a straight red card against FC Volendam at 1-0 and thus played a significant part in the 1-2 defeat.
The controversial scene occurred in the 53rd minute: The former Bundesliga professional caught opponent Gibson Yah in the opponent’s penalty area from behind with an open sole above the left ankle. Referee Richard Martens did not hesitate long and showed the red card.

There were scuffles on the pitch and the excitement was also great on the sidelines. Holtby’s coach Carl Hoefkens raged, argued loudly with the fourth official and threw his jacket towards the coach’s bench.
At the time of the foul, the guests from Breda were still leading 1-0 after an own goal by Volendam’s Nick Elias Verschuren (32′). After Holtby’s dismissal, however, Breda had to finish the game with one player less.
Bitter defeat for Breda
Goals from Henk Veerman (58′) and Robert Mühren (78′) turned the game around and Volendam landed a much-needed three points in the relegation battle. In the 90th minute, a second Breda player, Fredrik Oldrup Jensen, was sent off.
With the win, Volendam moved past Breda in the table and are in 13th place with 13 points. Breda has twelve points and is in 14th place.
For Holtby, Breda is already the tenth club of his professional career. The veteran has played 225 Bundesliga games, 137 games in the 2nd Bundesliga, 38 in the Premier League and 21 in the Europa League in his career.
