Mountaineer Thomas Huber was involved in the rescue operation in Pakistan. Now he expresses his emotions about the death of the Olympic champion.
Mountaineer Thomas Huber has publicly bid farewell to former world-class biathlete Laura Dahlmeier with an emotional post after her death.
“Your tent is now empty, but your energy shines in these mountains into eternity. All the pain over what happened is hard to put into words,” the 57-year-old wrote on Instagram on Thursday.
Huber involved in search operation
Huber was involved in the futile rescue operation of Dahlmeier. On Wednesday, there was final certainty about the death of the double Olympic champion from 2018, after she was hit by a rockfall on Laila Peak in Pakistan on Monday and apparently died immediately. Attempts to recover the body have so far failed due to the terrain conditions at almost 6,000 meters.
“When we received the news (…), we immediately packed our backpacks,” wrote Huber. Among others, with expedition leader Alan Rousseau and the American Jackson Marvell, he had tried to reach the site of the accident. But the weather and threatening rockfall prevented the recovery. “After several overflights at Laila Peak, we knew that Laura had ascended to her last summit.”
“Laura lived her dream until the end”
Despite the tragedy, Huber also found comforting words. “As tragic as everything is, Laura lived her dream until the end, every second, and she was and still is a role model for the fact that life is an incredible gift that should be filled with love, passion and fire, anything else would be tragic,” he wrote: “Thank you Laura for all the moments we were able to experience together. We will all miss a lot, your laughter, your energy, the “Hai mi lecks am Arsch” from your mouth…”
Huber wants to set off again on Saturday. He had considered how to proceed now, “but you, Laura, already gave me the answer,” he wrote. That’s why he’s going back to the Choktoi Valley on Saturday to continue the path “that Laura would have taken too.”
