Nothing can be seen from the former world club. Sampdoria Genoa has reached a historic low point.
Sampdoria Genoa was once a top European club, now the Italian champion of the 90/91 season has reached a historic low. For the first time in the club’s history, Sampdoria has to go to third class.
The descent to series C was sealed on Tuesday with a zero number at Juve Stabia. When the 20 teams in series B, the four -time Italian cup winner descends directly, with a win you could have saved yourself in the relegation relegation.
“Would it have been worse? The answer is a dry, succinct and irrefutable no,” comments the Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport the descent and writes in the same context of “The worst season of all time”.
Sampdoria belonged to the European elite
Third class? Sampdoria? For old -established Tifosi, both words could hardly be apart.
In the club icons Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini as well as Ruud Gullit, Clarence Seedorf or Jürgen Klinsmann, it was the big names in the 1990s that ran for Sampdoria. In addition to the successes already mentioned at the national level, the BluCerchiati (blue -framed, based on the club colors) also triumphed on an international stage.
In the 89/90 season, the European Cup winner was won after the team had already been in the final against Barcelona last year. It was also 91/92 the Catalans who conquered the genuates in a final. In the last final of the national champions’ cup before the introduction of the Champions League, “Samp” was defeated just after extra time.
Compared to today’s reality, the successful past has an almost untrue, so far it is removed from a purely sporting point of view. But it gets worse. Women and the male U20 of the BluCerchiati also experienced catastrophic season and as a result descend from the highest leagues. “A total disaster that is in a way absurd and makes the future damn complicated,” the press found.
“The Golden Sampd’oro”: icon trio hurried to the rescue
Most recently, even “the protagonists of the Golden Sampd’oro” were hurried to rescue. The club icons Alberico Evani and Attilio Lombardo took over at the coaching bench, Mancini was at the start as a consultant. But they, too, did not manage to “convey something of the ‘sampdorianità’ to a team without a soul that is necessary for a turn”.
After eleven years in a row in series A – then stars such as Bruno Fernandes or Patrik Schick played in Genoa – and relegation in 2023, the next step backwards. Nobody would have expected that before the season. Last year they had even fought for return to Serie A. Only in the promotion playoffs were they Blucerchiati failed.
In the case of piros release “broke something together”
“It was supposed to be a completely different season,” the Gazzetta Dello Sport looked back and remembers “promotion sample” and new commitments, “which turned out to be expedient”. The disaster finally started when Andrea Pirlo was sawn off as a trainer.
With his release in August, “something collapsed immediately”. But the turning point was not successful, successor Andrea Sottil also had to go, the team “fell into an even darker whirlpool” – and finally went down.
Now the biggest of all challenges is waiting for those responsible. Does Sampdoria only have another crashed football giant, or is the turn – and the return to the shine from old days? At the moment the latter appears somewhat unlikely.
