Superstar Marta would already be 41 years old at the time of the home tournament in 2027. The coach nevertheless hopes for her participation.
The Brazilian national team hopes for star player Marta at the home World Cup in 2027 – even though the striker would already be 41 years old at that time. “I’m counting on her, I’m counting on all players who are in form, like Marta,” coach Arthur Elias told the news agency AFP : “But neither she nor I know if she will participate, only time will tell.”
Marta had retired from the Selecao after the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, but returned for the Copa América last summer and won it for the fourth time in her career.
Subsequently, the six-time World Player of the Year announced that she did not rule out playing for the national team until the 2027 World Cup. Marta has not yet crowned herself World Champion; at the 2007 World Cup in China, she and the Selecao lost to Germany 0:2 in the final.
Elias hopes for Marta and first World Cup triumph
Regardless of whether Marta will be part of the World Cup squad, coach Elias believes in Brazil. While the men’s national team has already secured the World Cup title five times, the women are still waiting for the big coup.
“We have a great chance because the Selecao is in a great phase and we have young players who will continue to improve until the World Cup,” said Elias: “It will be difficult, but we are playing at home, which increases our chances. I am optimistic.”
