Mats Hummels’ active career ends next summer. In his podcast, the 36-year-old provides new impressions for his decision.
The professional career of Mats Hummels and thus also a piece of German football history will end in the coming summer. In his podcast alone, the 36-year-old has now provided new details about his decision.
“I didn’t have one aha moment, but I was just before last summer, you have to say. There were many days when I thought last summer it actually fits,” said Hummels, whose contract had expired at Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024.
Mats Hummels explains his upcoming career end
The reason for his tendency at that time? “I simply had no longer felt the motivation to go into training somewhere. There were really good opportunities in July and it was not like this, I definitely don’t want to train now. I don’t want to go back into this mill.
Hummels complains about ex-Roma coach
With the Roma, Hummels has so far been running its own demands. In Serie A, the central defender only comes to 13 missions, including eleven in the starting eleven. Back then, he convinced a “horny conversation that motivated me properly”. What is meant is the former chief coach Daniele de Rossi, who was released a little later – in September 2024.
“Unfortunately, it was only with him for the two weeks,” said Hummels. Among his successor Ivan Juric, Hummels had started a “modest situation”, “both as far as the games are concerned and the training content”.
Everyone has “their own interpretation of football, I also respect that. But I don’t know how far you can still get away from what I like and strongly captivates. In time it was clear to me: that was it.”
Good for Hummels: Juric was released in November, and the defender was initially used more often under the successor Claudio Ranieri before the missions became less common again.
Now Hummel’s “not again my private life, my son, my friends”.
