Michail Antonio, teammate of Niclas Füllkrug at West Ham United, gave his first interview more than four months after his serious car accident. In it he describes how the misfortune came about.
Mikhail Antonio from West Ham United gave his first interview more than three months after his serious car accident. The 34-year-old remembers that the weather was very bad at the time of his accident, it rained and stormed. However, he “has no memory” of the accident itself, he told the BBC .
“It is strange, because all the time I was told that I was awake and talked to everyone – to the police, the people and the person who found me,” Antonio continued about his gaps in memory. “The police came and when they found me, I sat between the two of them. I wasn’t actually sitting in the driver’s seat. “
Antonio: “My leg was completely shattered”
The police said Antonio that it looked like “as if I tried to climb the window out of the window, but because my leg was broken so hard, I probably couldn’t get out of pain,” said Niclas Füllkrug’s teammate. “My leg was completely smashed, they got me out and put on a splint on the side of the car.”
A recovery with the helicopter was not possible because of the bad weather, so Antonio was removed with the ambulance. He only saw the remains of his car for the first time three weeks ago.
“I had a strange feeling in my stomach. I realized how close I was to death. I had seen the pictures, but in reality it looked ten times worse. The car was a single chaos. That was hard for me, ”the striker admitted.
“Already thought of giving him back”
He rejected speculation that he could have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the crash. In contrast, antonio had doubts about his car, a Ferrari before his “terrible accident”.
“The rear of the car broke out again and again, I didn’t feel safe,” he reported. “I had him for three weeks and thought about giving him back.”
On the day of the accident, Antonio actually wanted to drive to the training center with another car, he says. But since he was “too lazy” to unload a few bags from this car, as his wife asked him, he took the sports car.

Antonio works on his comeback
In the accident, he suffered a broken leg, recovered from the badly damaged vehicle and then taken to a London hospital. The striker was operated on there and only released more than three weeks later.
In the meantime, Antonio, who scored 83 goals for West Ham in 323 games and is therefore the most successful scorer in the club history, is fighting for his comeback. It is optimistic and is even before the schedule in rehab. “I am in good condition, also mentally,” he says.
