FIFA President Gianni Infantino had recently emphasized wanting to stay out of the Middle East conflict. Now he wants to help rebuild Palestinian football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced assistance measures for the reconstruction of Palestinian football following the peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
“The task of football is to support, unite, and give hope,” said the 55-year-old: “In Gaza and in Palestine, we will help rebuild all football facilities. Together with the Palestinian Football Association, we will bring football back to every region of the country.”
On Friday, a ceasefire came into effect in the Gaza Strip after Israel and Hamas agreed to the first part of the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.
Infantino was present at the meeting in Egypt upon Trump’s invitation. The FIFA boss assured that the world governing body is ready to support the peace process with all means at its disposal.
Infantino had recently emphasized not wanting to get involved in the Middle East conflict. “FIFA cannot solve geopolitical problems,” he said in early October after a meeting of the world governing body’s Council.
