Florian Wirtz is still waiting for his first goal for Liverpool FC. Oliver Kahn now believes he knows the reason for this.
The wait continues. After it looked like Florian Wirtz was gaining momentum during FC Liverpool’s 5-1 victory in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt, there was another setback over the weekend. During the English champion’s 2-3 loss against FC Brentford, the 22-year-old could neither score his first goal for the Reds nor prevent the fourth consecutive league defeat.
Why does Wirtz continue to have such starting difficulties in England? Oliver Kahn now offered a theory. “The way he moves there, you always get the feeling he’s not really integrated yet,” said the former goalkeeper and board chief of FC Bayern on Sky : “You see it with the players, when a goal is scored and who they celebrate with – that doesn’t quite fit yet, that’s my feeling.”
Wirtz is “a brilliant footballer”
Kahn believes that Wirtz “still needs a bit of self-confidence” to “move confidently in this environment with so many top people.” Whether he is right with this statement or rather on the wrong track remains unclear. During the decisive victory in Frankfurt, Wirtz was hugged by all teammates after his two assists. They apparently knew how important these successful experiences were for him.
Meanwhile, Oliver Bierhoff isn’t worried about Wirtz. The former DFB manager is certain that the national player will establish himself in Liverpool. After all, Wirtz is “a brilliant footballer, has the right timing and the right vision, which is why you have to give him a bit of time,” said Bierhoff.
Wirtz himself recently emphasized that he would like to score more goals and assists. “But I can probably evaluate my games best, I’m honest with myself. It wasn’t always as bad as people say,” he described. “I know that I still have a lot of room for improvement.”
