Michael van Gerwen and his wife Daphne have separated. The darts superstar himself announced this – and is also drawing sporting consequences.
Darts superstar Michael van Gerwen and his wife Daphne have separated. The three-time world champion announced the relationship break-up on Saturday via Instagram.
“To our regret, I want to let you know that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship,” he explained.
“As a result, I have withdrawn from the upcoming tournaments,” the 36-year-old also announced and asked for understanding. “I’m sorry to disappoint my fans, but I’m confident they’ll understand my choice.”
The PDC has already confirmed the cancellation of the Dutch Darts Championship. “Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from his participation in the Elten Safety Shoes Dutch Darts Championship this weekend,” the association wrote on X. It is unclear how many tournaments MvG wants to withdraw from.
MVG is in a slump
The Dutchman is currently going through a slump in form, and it is quite possible that the private problems are also affecting his performance. After his elimination in the Premier League, the German darts professional Gabriel Clemens had already advised him to take a break at Sport1.
Now the Dutchman is taking the recommended break – albeit with a sad background.
Michael married his long-time girlfriend Daphne in 2014. Together, the couple has a son and a daughter.
