“Many hate them”: Bayern coach finds clear words

Already during the game, Gordon Herbert was visibly invited, discussed violently several times with the referees and was emotionally fully charged. But even after the final whistle it remained heated.

Before the start of the BBL playoffs, Bavaria’s coach Gordon Herbert emphasized the special position of his club in Germany and criticized the tendencies of sports fans.

Bayern coach Gordon Herbert took on his team before the start of the BBL playoffs on Saturday evening and also lost significant words about the position of the club. “Either you love Bavaria or you hate Bavaria,” said the Canadian in the run -up to the first game against Central German BC when he was asked about an old quote from Svetislav Pesic.

Pesic, who had trained FC Bayern’s basketball players from 2012 to 2016, once said that many would like to see FCBB losing. “When you play for Bavaria, the fans don’t come into the hall to see the other team victories, but to lose Bavaria.”

He got to the point for Herbert. “Coach Pesic is definitely right,” he agreed and made a comparison to his homeland. “That reminds me of ice hockey in Canada. All Canadians who are not fans from the team want to see the Toronto Maple Leafs. Many hate them and want to see them losing.”

“I think it is the same with Bavaria in Germany,” said Herbert, who was slightly upset about these tendencies of many fans. “Unfortunately we live in a very negative world, where it is unfortunately the case that many hope that large teams that are also a large brand fail.”

Missing Constance in the BBL

The Bavarians had played a strong season in the Euroleague, but missed the self -contained goal Final Four. Ultimately, Herbert and Co. were eliminated in the Play-in tournament of the European premier class against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, the Munich team wiggled again and again in the Bundesliga. “It will be very important in the playoffs that you start well so that the opponent doesn’t even get the feeling that he can win,” said world champion Johannes Voigtmann.

Trainer Herbert committed the basketball champion to the playoffs in the Bundesliga. “We have to bring our Euroleague mentality, our Euroleague game to the BBL,” he said. “We showed which level we can play at.”

“Respect for the MBC, but …”

Bayern just ended the BBL main round as the first table. From Saturday (8:00 p.m. in the Sport1 Liveticker), the Munich team will meet their fear opponents in the quarter -final series. In the trophy, the Syntainics had surprisingly beaten the Munich in the final Four and then even secured the title.

“Every team in the BBL is specially motivated against us,” said Herbert, for whom his team only has to appear on himself. “I have a lot of respect for the MBC, but it shouldn’t be important to whom we play. We have to focus on the fact that we play as we want. Our attitude and our work setting must fit.”
