In 1958, 23 people died in a plane crash with the Man United team on board.
Coach Michael Carrick has reminded his Manchester United players of the historical significance of the Munich disaster. Ahead of the 68th anniversary of the tragedy, the team manager said the players must “understand the history.”
During the tragedy in Munich in 1958, the Manchester United team was on its way back after a European Cup victory against Partizan Belgrade when the plane crashed after a refueling stop in the Bavarian capital. A total of 23 people died, including eleven players and staff members of the traditional English club.
“As soon as you come to this club, you are made aware of it. You can’t help but know and understand the history,” Carrick said before the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. He added that Munich is “the biggest part of the club’s history,” also because of how the club and team rebuilt themselves afterwards and later celebrated successes.
