The basketball world champion made it to the final of the NBA Sportmanship Award – as the only European.
Basketball world champion Franz Wagner has been nominated for the sportsmanship award of the North American professional league NBA. The award recognizes the player “best embodies the ideals of the sports spirit on the field”.
The 23-year-old from the Orlando Magic is the only European among the six players from the six divisions of the NBA who made it into the final selection. Wagner represents the Southeast Division, the winner is selected from the six finalists.
The Sportmanship Award has been awarded since 1996, the “Joe Dumar’s Trophy” has been named since 2000 after its first winner, the Detroit Pistons legend Joe Dumars. Since then, in addition to Americans, only one Brit and an Australian have received the award, Wagner could become the first German. Last year, Tyrese Maxey from the Philadelphia 76ers cleared the award, the record winner is Mike Conley with four awards.
In the NBA, Wagner and the Orlando Magic continue after the 116:10 victory at the San Antonio Spurs on the night from Thursday to Friday (1:00 a.m./MESZ) at the Washington Wizards.
