The US basketball association uses a managing director for the women’s national team and has not hired less than Sue Bird for the new position. The task of the 44-year-olds, who became the Olympic champion and four times world champion, will be, among other things, to put together the squad and the team of coaches for international competitions. For example for the 2026 World Cup in Germany and the summer games 2028 in Los Angeles.
“It’s really exciting. I know what it feels like to represent his country as a player. I know what it feels like to be on the podium as a player,” said Bird. “Now that I have finished my career, it is a natural step for me to continue to influence, to represent my country and to be part of a gold organization.”
Bird won the World Cup gold, Olympic gold, the WNBA and the college title
Bird had ended her career in the Professional League WNBA 2022 after 19 years and four titles with Seattle Storm. More Olympic gold medals in basketball than she only got her long -time teammate Diana Taurasi (6).
The new managing director is one of only twelve players who won the World Cup gold, Olympic gold, the WNBA and college title.
