“New low”: Maximum penalty for Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho continues to play no role in England. At Aston Villa, the former BVB star now faces the ultimate punishment.

Jadon Sancho has reached “a new low” in England – as the English newspaper Daily Mail put it. The 25-year-old – now in the service of Aston Villa – was substituted immediately after being brought on in the second half during the league win against Manchester City (1-0) – the ultimate punishment in football.

Sancho initially came into the match for the injured Emiliano Buendia (29th minute). After a modest performance, coach Unai Emery reacted after halftime and substituted him for Evann Guessand (74th minute).

When being substituted, Sancho refused to shake hands with Guessand and didn’t even acknowledge coach Emery with a glance.

Emery hasn’t given up hope on Sancho

“That wasn’t a punishment, but part of my plan – he played 45 minutes. The other substitutes were ready,” Emery explained the decision after the match. “Of course, my goal is to get him back to his best form – and if he manages that, he will return to the national team,” said Emery.

Sancho is “still young. He’s still hungry to prove his skills and qualities, and hopefully we can get the best out of him again here.”

The Englishman has been on loan from Manchester United to Aston Villa since last summer. For the Birmingham club, he has only managed a meager five competitive games so far, starting only twice. He neither scored a goal nor provided an assist.

Sancho’s time at BVB

Sancho is still under contract with the Red Devils until 2026. Last season he was on loan to FC Chelsea, where he also failed to establish himself.

The offensive player had his most successful period at Borussia Dortmund. In 2021 he joined Manchester United, where he mainly clashed with coach Erik ten Hag and was temporarily removed from the squad.

In January 2024, he returned to Dortmund on loan for half a year.
