Star striker Robert Lewandowski expressed his condolences after the death of the trainer legend Leo Beenhakker.
“Quiet in peace, coach,” wrote the attacker of FC Barcelona on Instagram over the Dutch, under which the former star of Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern played his first caps for Poland: “Thank you for the chance to fulfill my dream in the national team.”
Schuster emphasized Beenhakkers man leadership
Beenhakker, Poland’s national coach from 2006 to 2009, died on Thursday at the age of 82.
Poland was BEENHAKKER’s last coaching station, and he was also coached by the Netherlands (at the 1990 World Cup with the legendary spuck incident between Frank Rijkaard and Rudi Völler), Saudi Arabia as well as Trinidad and Tobago (at the 2006 World Cup), but was primarily successful as a club coach.

At home, “Don Leo” won the national league twice with Ajax Amsterdam and once with Feyenoord Rotterdam, as a coach of Real Madrid, he won three championships from 1987 to 1989. In the 1988/89 season he also trained the German legend Bernd Schuster.
“His leadership was fascinating,” Schuster later recalled in the mirror of Beenhakker: “We were three top foreigners and almost the entire Spanish national team. Such a collection of stars is actually not to be tamed. But Leo made sure that everyone got a piece of fame. So everyone went for the other.”
