Rummenigge over club World Cup: “It’s also about money”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge increased the pressure on the Bayern stars because of the club World Cup in summer.

The 69-year-old sees the new format as an opportunity to take more money after the numerous contract extensions at Bayern Munich.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sees the club World Cup in summer for Bayern Munich as a further source of income. “It’s also about money, a lot of money and that is a bit more motivation,” said the long -time CEO and today’s supervisory board of the record champions at an appointment of the Infinity League on Saturday in Munich.

“I mean, it is known that the last contract extensions were all quite decent, and if you then have the opportunity to make a lot of money at a tournament, above all from round to round, in which you can get on, then you should take the chance,” said Rummenigge. Most recently, the World Association FIFA had announced that it would release one billion US dollar prize money (around 930 million euros) to the 32 participants of the new format.

Rummenigge wants a high level of motivation from Bavaria

For the team of coach Vincent Kompany, it is important to go into the tournament with fun. One should “appear motivated”, nobody would “defend themselves”, said Rummenigge. Critics see the numerous games in the newly introduced format a further burden for the professionals. “I would like to quote my friend Franz Beckenbauer, who has always said, who has always said, preferred to play than train,” replied Rummenigge.

The club World Cup will be held for the first time as a four-week mega event (June 14th to July 13th). Europe provides the biggest contingent with twelve teams, from the Bundesliga Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
