Former England national coach Gareth Southgate was knighted on Wednesday for his services to football. According to English media reports, the 54-year-old received the knighthood from Prince William at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Southgate, who coached the “Three Lions” from 2016 to the 2024 European Championship, can now call himself “Sir Gareth.” After Alf Ramsey, World Cup coach of 1966, Walter Winterbottom and Bobby Robson, he is the fourth former coach of the English to be knighted.

Southgate had led the English team twice to the final of a European Championship (2021, 2024), but the British lost both finals. In addition, there is a fourth place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. After a transition period with interim coach Lee Carsley, Thomas Tuchel has been head coach since the beginning of the year.
